Wayfinder is inspired by Hōkūle’a, a voyaging canoe which has traveled the world, traversing thousands of miles of ocean using Polynesian navigation techniques such as observing birds, ocean swells, wind patterns and the maps drawn above us in the stars. A few years ago, Hōkūle’a circumnavigated the world, fostering deep awareness global environmental consciousness. This song is my way of expressing awe at the wisdom of indigenous knowledge systems and living traditions of sustainability. Hundreds of thousands of activists have made this point, but it bears repeating: the consciousness that must guide the decisions we make as a global society in a time of climate change come not from fads or slogans or quick fixes, but rather from the understanding of humanity’s place on Earth, which has been refined over the course of thousands of years.
